Fort du Hackenberg
Fort du Hackenberg ( Click here ) was one of the largest strongholds on the Ma-
ginot Line, the system of fixed defences designed to protect France's eastern bor-
der from German invasion. Built at enormous expense to house over 1000 soldiers,
the fort proved all but useless in the face of Hitler's blitzkrieg tactics. Its 10km of
subterranean tunnels now stand as a fascinating monument to one of the greatest
defensive follies of WWII.
