This great city is now just 45 minutes from Paris by TGV train. Walk on foot from
the station to the splendid cathedral ( Click here ) where the kings of France
were crowned for 600 years, and then to the even more beautiful Romanesque
Basilique St-Rémi ( Click here ). Reims has a fine range of places to eat and, for
me, one of France's best fish restaurants: Le Foch ( 03 26 47 48 22;
www.lefoch.com ; 37 blvd Foch), close to central place d'Erlon in the city heart.
2 LE MESNIL-SUR-OGER
Head for the village of Le Mesnil in the Côte des Blancs, the greatest Chardon-
nay commune in Champagne. Taste with rising star Christophe Constant at
Champagne JL Vergnon ( 03 26 57 53 86; www.champagne-jl-vergnon.com ; 1
Grand Rue) in the village centre and lunch afterwards at Le Mesnil ( 03 26 57
95 57; www.restaurantlemesnil.com ; 2 rue Pasteur), five minutes' walk away,
where Cedric the chef cooks monkfish beautifully - perfect with one of the fine,
fairly priced Champagnes on the list.
