Champagne & Northern
France
Nowhere sums up the effervescent French spirit better than Champagne. This region
has been famous for its bubbly since the 17th century, when a monk by the name of
Dom Pierre Pérignon added some fizz to his otherwise humdrum wine and dis-
covered he'd created something altogether more exciting.
A couple of centuries on, you'll find famous Champagne houses dotted throughout
the region, especially around the elegant towns of Reims and Épernay: a tasting tour
of their musty cellars is an absolutely unforgettable experience.
Looking west, the regions of Alsace and Lorraine crackle with a unique blend of
French and Germanic cultures. And to the north, the many memorials and cemeter-
ies dotted around Picardy and the Pas-de-Calais recall the region's tragic history as
one of the key battlegrounds of WWI.
