CATHÉDRALE ST-PIERRE
Cathedral
( 9.30am-noon & 3-6pm)
Crowning the old city is the 17th-century cathedral,
which has an impressive, if rather dark, neoclassical interior. Much of the surround-
ing old town was gutted by the great fire of 1720, started by a drunken carpenter
who accidentally set alight a pile of shavings. Half-timbered houses that survived
line the old city's cobbled streets such as nearby rue St-Michel and rue St-Georges.
PALAIS DU PARLEMENT DE BRETAGNE
Law Courts
(place du Parlement de Bretagne)
This 17th-century former seat of the rebellious
Breton parliament has in more recent times been home to the Palais de Justice. In
1994 this building, too, was destroyed by fire, started by demonstrating fishermen.
