Roscoff
POP 3780
Unlike many of its industrial and less-than-beautiful sister Channel ports, Roscoff
(Rosko in Breton) provides a captivating first glimpse of Brittany. Granite houses
dating from the 16th century wreathe the pretty docks, which are surrounded by
emerald-green fields producing cauliflowers, onions, tomatoes, new potatoes and
artichokes.
Roscoff farmers known as 'Johnnies', wearing distinctive horizontally striped tops,
used to load up their boats with plaited strings of locally grown pink onions and
cross the Channel to the UK, where they peddled - and pedalled - with their onions
hanging from their handlebars, thus creating the traditional British stereotype of the
French.
