Normandy & Brittany
Stretching along France's northern coastline overlooking La Manche (the English
Channel), Normandy has been at the centre of French history for more than 1000
years. And so it's a region awash with historical sights, from the iconic spires of Mont
St-Michel and the handwoven epic of the Bayeux Tapestry to the landmark beaches
of D-Day. It's also home to three of the nation's favourite 'C's - camembert, cider and
the potent apple-flavoured spirit Calvados.
Across the border is Brittany. Once an independent kingdom, it's still governed by its
own culture, language and fiery Celtic spirit. This wild and windswept region boasts
France's craggiest coastline, as well as a whole host of prehistoric monuments, me-
dieval châteaux and timeless towns - including the corsair city of St-Malo, delightful
Dinan and its lovely half-timbered capital, Quimper.
