Marais & Bastille
The Marais, the area of the Right Bank north of Île St-Louis in the 3e and 4e, was
exactly what its name implies - 'marsh' or 'swamp' - until the 13th century, when it
was converted to farmland. In the early 17th century, Henri IV built the place Royale
(today's place des Vosges), turning the area into Paris' most fashionable residential
district and attracting wealthy aristocrats who then erected their own luxurious hô-
tels particulier .

Modern Art Museum

has amazed and delighted visitors since it was inaugurated in 1977, not just for its
outstanding collection of modern art, but also for its radical architectural statement.
The open space at ground level has temporary exhibitions and information desks,
while the 4th and 5th floors house the Musée National d'Art Moderne (MNAM; Na-
tional Museum of Modern Art; adult/child €10-12/free; 11am-9pm Wed-Mon) ,
France's national collection of art dating from 1905 onwards.
