In-Depth Information
Place du Tertre was once the main square of the village of Montmartre. These days
it's crammed with cafés, restaurants and tourists, as well as numerous portrait
painters who will happily do your likeness.
Bateau Lavoir
At No 11b on place Émile Goudeau is the Bateau Lavoir, where the artists
Modigliani, Picasso, Kees Van Dongen and Max Jacob lived in an old piano factory
(later a laundry). The original building was at No 13 but burned down in 1970 and
was rebuilt two doors away in 1978.
Abbesses Metro Station
Take the steps from place Émile Goudeau and walk to place des Abbesses, where
you can see the famous art-nouveau entrance to the Abbesses metro station, de-
signed in 1912 by Hector Guimard.
Cimetière de Montmartre
At the western end of rue des Abbesses is Montmartre's largest cemetery, where
you'll find the graves of Émile Zola, Alexandre Dumas, Edgar Degas, François
Truffaut and Vaslav Nijinsky, among others. The entrance to the cemetery is on rue
