In-Depth Information
This is an exquisite example of the work of a very important architect of the time,
Jules Hardouin-Mansart (1646-1708). The paintings, representative of art fash-
ions at the end of the reign of Louis XIV, are also stunning: they evoke the idea
that the French king was chosen by God and as such his lieutenant on earth.
This is the chapel where, in 1770, the future king Louis XVI wed Marie Antoinette
in - the beginning of the French Revolution.
5 ENCELADE GROVE
Versailles' gardens are extraordinary but my favourite spot has to be this grove,
typical of the gardens created for Louis XIV by André Le Nôtre. A gallery of trel-
lises surround a pool with a statue of Enceladus, chief of the Titans, who was
punished for his pride by the gods from Mount Olympus. When the fountains are
on, it's impressive.
