Versailles, as official residence of the kings of France, is magnificent - the only
place where the daily life of the monarchy before the French Revolution can really
be felt. My favourite moment is the evening, after the crowds have gone, when I
quietly walk from room to room lecturing to just a small group…extraordinary.
