Car & Motorcycle
The A5 freeway linking Madrid with Badajoz crosses the Portuguese frontier and
continues on to Lisbon, and there are many other road connections up and down
the length of the Hispano- Portuguese frontier.
Train
From Portugal, the main line runs from Lisbon across Extremadura to Madrid.
Lisbon to Madrid (chair/sleeper class €58.60/83.20, 10½ hours, one daily)
Lisbon to Irún (chair/sleeper class €68.80/96.60, 14½ hours, one daily)
SEA
Ferries run to mainland Spain regularly from the Canary Islands, Italy, North Africa
(Algeria, Morocco and the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla) and the UK. Most
services are run by the Spanish national ferry company, Acciona Trasmediter-
ránea ( 902 45 46 45; www.trasmediterranea.es ) . You can take vehicles on the
following routes.
ITALY
Civitavecchia (near Rome) to Barcelona (20½ hours, six to seven weekly)
Genoa to Barcelona (18 hours, three weekly)
Livorno (Tuscany) to Barcelona (19½ hours, three weekly)
Porto Torres (Sardinia) to Barcelona (12 hours, one daily)
UK
From mid-March to mid-November, Brittany Ferries (

Plymouth to Santander (24 to 35 hours, weekly)
Portsmouth to Santander (24 to 35 hours, three weekly)
