Wherever the blame lies, the civil war split
communities, families and friends, killed an
estimated 350,000 Spaniards (some writers
put the number as high as 500,000), and
caused untold damage and misery. Both
sides (Franco's Nationalists and the left-wing
Republicans) committed atrocious massacres
and reprisals, and employed death squads to
eliminate opponents. On 26 April 1937, Ger-
man planes bombed the Basque town of
Guernica (called Gernika in Basque), causing
terrible casualties. The USSR withdrew from
the war in September 1938, and in January
1939 the Nationalists took Barcelona unop-
posed. The Republican government and hun-
dreds of thousands of supporters fled to
France and, on 28 March 1939, Franco's
forces entered Madrid.
