Spanish history reads like a thriller. The story begins with the great em-
pires of antiquity, moves on to one of the most enlightened civilisations
ever to have ruled on European soil, before the rise of Christendom and
its powerful kings and queens transformed Spain forever. Jump forward
to the turbulent 20th century and you find a nation convulsed by a fratri-
cidal war, whereafter the country disappeared into the long shadows cast
by Francisco Franco for four decades. But there's a happy ending: Spain
has emerged phoenix-like from dictatorship to become one of Europe's
most dynamic and modern countries.
