Andalucía
Picture the scenes…
Seville, 8am: the ornate Giralda shimmers above the Río Guadalquivir as two at-
tractive señoritas in polka-dot dresses stagger back from last night's feria.
Ronda, 3pm: a waiter pulls down the shutters in a deserted cafe, a lean cat slinks
down a blinding whitewashed street; but nothing else moves - it's too damned hot.
Cádiz, 1am: waves crash outside a paint-peeled flamenco club, while inside the
singer strikes an anguished note and summons up something deep, dark and soul-
ful.
Images of Andalucía are so potent - and so quintessentially Spanish - that it's
sometimes difficult not to feel a sense of déjà vu. It's almost as if you've already
been there in your dreams: a solemn Easter parade, an ebullient spring festival,
exotic nights in the Alhambra. In the stark light of day the picture is no less compel-
ling. Here in the arid landscapes of southern Iberia, amazing experiences await.
