Detour:
Teruel
One of Spain's most attractive provincial cities, Teruel is situated in southern Aragon
province but is actually easier to get to from Valencia (2½ hours by train). In this open-air
museum of ornate Mudéjar monuments, the streets are filled with life - a reflection of a
city reasserting itself with cultural attitude.
Teruel's cathedral (Plaza de la Catedral; adult/child €3/2; 11am-2pm & 4-8pm) is a
rich example of the Mudéjar imagination at work with its kaleidoscopic brickwork and col-

The most impressive of Teruel's other Mudéjar monuments is the Torre de El Salvador
( www.teruelmudejar.com , in Spanish; Calle El Salvador; adult/child €2.50/1.80;
10am-2pm & 4-8pm) , an early-14th-century extravaganza of brick and ceramics built
around an older Islamic minaret.
Getting There & Around
Morella is best reached via Castellón, which has good train connections. Two daily
weekday buses (€9, 2¼ hours) and one Saturday service of Autos Mediterráneo (
964 22 00 54) run to/from Castellón's train station.

ism'. Then again, if you're looking for a lively social scene, good beaches and a
suntan…
