Shawls & Veils
( Carrera de San Jerónimo 2; 9.30am-1.30pm & 4.30-8pm Mon-Sat; Sol) You
don't see them much these days, but the exquisite fringed and embroidered
mantones and mantoncillos (traditional Spanish shawls worn by women on grand
occasions) and delicate mantillas (Spanish veils) are stunning and uniquely Span-
ish gifts. Gil also sells abanicos (Spanish fans).

Wines
( Calle de Echegaray 19; 9.30am-2.30pm & 5.30-9pm Mon-Fri, 10am-2.30pm &
6.30-9.30pm Sat; Sevilla or Antón Martín) All wine shops should be like this. This
family-run corner shop really knows its wines and the decoration has scarcely
changed since 1913, with wooden shelves and even a faded fresco on the ceiling.

Food & Wine
( Calle de Ayala 24; 9.30am-2.30pm & 5.30-8.30pm Mon-Fri, 9.30am-2.30pm Sat;
Serrano) Behind the attractive old facade lies a connoisseur's paradise, filled
with local cheeses, sausages, wines and coffees. The products here are great for a
gift, but everything's so good that you won't want to share. Mantequería Bravo won
the 2007 prize for Madrid's best gourmet food shop or delicatessen - it's as simple
as that.
