REAL BASÍLICA DE SAN ISIDORO
Older even than the cathedral, the Real Basílica de San Isidoro provides a stunning
Romanesque counterpoint to the former's Gothic strains.
The main basilica is a hotchpotch of styles, but the two main portals on the south-
ern facade are pure Romanesque. Of particular note is the Puerta del Perdón (on
the right), which has been attributed to Maestro Mateo, the genius of the cathedral
at Santiago de Compostela.
The attached Panteón Real (admission €4, free Thu afternoon; 10am-1.30pm
& 4-6.30pm Mon-Sat, 10am-1.30pm Sun) houses the remaining sarcophagi, which
rest with quiet dignity beneath a canopy of some of the finest Romanesque fres-
coes in Spain.

Spanish architecture prize a few years back.
Although the museum has a growing permanent collection, it mostly houses tem-
