In-Depth Information
Spain's finest prehistoric art, in the Cueva de Altamira, 2km southwest of Santillana,
was discovered in 1879 by Cantabrian historian and scientist Marcelino Sanz de
Sautuola and his eight-year-old daughter María Justina. It took more than 20 years,
after further discoveries of cave art in France, before scientists accepted that these
wonderful paintings of bison, horses and other animals really were the handiwork of
primitive people many thousands of years ago. By 2002 Altamira had attracted so
many visitors that the cave was closed to prevent deterioration of the paintings.
