stylish and individual creation. Begoña speaks for itself with colourful rooms decor-

Chain Hotel
( 944 12 43 00; www.barcelonervion.com ; Paseo Campo Volantin 11; s/d €42.50/
59.50; ) OK, it's a chain hotel and, yes, while the rooms are cheap, they
do charge over the odds for everything else. But let's be fair: hotels of this quality
don't come much cheaper than this. The location, on the riverfront and equidistant
to the old town and the Guggenheim, is ideal.

Design Hotel
( 944 25 33 00; www.granhoteldominebilbao.com ; Alameda Mazarredo 61; d from
€140; ) Designer chic all the way, from the Javier Mariscal interiors to
the Philippe Starck and Arne Jacobsen fittings - and that's just in the loos. This
stellar showpiece of the Silken chain has views of the Guggenheim from some of its
pricier rooms and from the roof terrace.
Eating
In the world of trade and commerce, the Basques are an outward-looking lot, but
when it comes to food they refuse to believe that any other people could possibly
match their culinary skills (and they may well have a point). This means that eating
out in Bilbao is generally a choice of Basque, Basque or Basque food. Still, life
could be worse and there are some terrific places to stuff yourself.
