Pintxos in San Sebastián Don't Miss
List
BY GABRIELLA RANELLI, COOKING SCHOOL TEACHER AND GASTRONOMIC TOUR LEADER
1 THE PINTXO CRAWL
The pintxos tradition is to go from bar to bar trying one pintxo and a drink in each
spot, then moving on. The idea is to try the house speciality in each one. Don't
count on sitting down. It's more like a movable cocktail party.
2 CALLE DE FERMÍN CALBETÓN & CALLE DE 31 DE AGOSTO
If you only have one day, you can't miss Calle de Fermin Calbetón or Calle de 31
de Agosto in the Parte Vieja (Old Town). Any place with a lot of people is prob-
ably a good bet, but remember that if you come at any time other than before
lunch and before dinner, an empty bar might just mean that you are off schedule.
3 GROS
The other great area for pintxos in San Sebastián is in Gros, east of the Parte
Vieja across the Río Urumea. Gros is where you will find more wine bars and
sophisticated contemporary pintxos . The pace is slower here and people might
linger longer in some of the bars on this side because the wine lists are espe-
cially tempting. Don't forget to try the cider.
