In-Depth Information
As you climb through the labyrinth of staircases, you'll see the great eras of the
cathedral's architectural history. But the cathedral was built not just through the
genius of its architects, but through the labour of local people, and from the sum-
mit the panoramic views are a reminder that the cathedral is the centrepiece of a
living, breathing city.
5 EL PALACIO GELMÍREZ
Don't miss the interior of this palace, an annex to the cathedral, with its numer-
ous Romanesque gems. I particularly like the kitchen and dining room with their
scenes of Galician banquets. It's rare to find two main pillars of Santiago life
(gastronomy and the social life that grew up around the cathedral) in one place.
