Basque Spain & Camino de
Santiago
This is the Spain that most foreign visitors have yet to discover. Spain's north coast
and its hinterland are home to some of the most dramatic scenery in the country,
from the Pyrenees of Navarra to wild coastline with picture-perfect villages.
The diversity and culinary innovation of the Basque Country finds expression in two
cities: magnificent San Sebastián, one of the world's most beautiful seaside cities,
and Bilbao, whose stirring Guggenheim Museum has become the symbol for the re-
gion. Away from the coast is the wine country of La Rioja and the stunning cathedral
cities of Burgos and León. Above all else this is pilgrim territory: the Camino de San-
tiago, a medieval pilgrimage trail running from the French border right across north
Spain, is undergoing a huge resurgence of interest. It all culminates in Santiago de
Compostela, whose cathedral is as splendid as it is spiritually significant.
