Catalonia & the Pyrenees
This corner of the country encompasses some of Spain's most dramatic scenery.
The Costa Brava boasts much of the wild beauty that first drew visitors here, in spite
of the occasional unsightly pocket of tourism-driven construction. Just inland are the
medieval cities of Girona and Figueres, the latter home to the 'theatre-museum' of
that city's zany son, Salvador DalĂ, whose influence ripples across the region. Run-
ning across the north of the region, the Pyrenees rise to mighty 3000m peaks from a
series of green and often remote valleys, dotted with villages that retain a palpable
rural and even medieval air.
Historic, bustling cities such as Tarragona and Zaragoza add urban sophistication to
the spectacular open spaces, while the postcard-perfect pueblos (villages) that dot
the region are among Spain's most beautiful.
