national security, or mitigate climate change while not causing intoler-
able damage on any of those fronts? Is it possible to seize those oppor-
tunities simultaneously—or would pursuing some of them severely
undermine the others? And can the United States take advantage of
these opportunities without fundamentally altering the role of govern-
ment in American society?
If the answer to any of these questions is no, then there is indeed
a fundamental choice between the two unfolding energy revolutions,
and Americans should commit decisively to one or the other. But if the
answer to all of the questions is yes, then the United States should be
wisely embracing energy opportunities across the board.
Either way, big changes are in store. Massive shit s in everything from
clean energy to oil and gas are leading to far-reaching consequences for
the U.S. economy, the environment, and America's role in the world.
