Figure 11-7. Using a bolt and barrel nut to secure the Upper Structural Side
In Figure 11-7, you'll notice one problem we encountered. Sometimes, when drilling the holes for
the bolt to be inserted into a barrel nut, the hole is drilled in such a way that the bolt does not line up
perfectly and will not easily be screwed into the barrel nut. The only solution is to enlarge the hole. In
Figure 11-7, you can see that the bottom bolt is visible in the barrel nut hole and is slightly closer to the
top of the hole than it is centered. We used a large bore drill bit and just drilled out more of the wood
near the top of the hole (we removed the bolt first).
Attach the other Upper Structural Side to Part H with two 1-1/2” bolts and barrel nuts. Figure 11-8
shows Parts F and G attached to Part H. Notice the barrel nut on the top-left side of Figure 11-8 is sitting
higher; it doesn't look pretty but it holds the side securely. This is the hole we had to enlarge for the bolt
to properly screw into the barrel nut.
