CATALUNYA'S HUMAN CASTLES
One of the strangest things you'll see in Catalonia arecastells,or human 'castles' - a
sport which originated in Valls, near Tarragona, in the 18th century and which has
spread to other parts of Catalonia since. It involves teams ofcastellersstanding on
each other's shoulders with a death-defying child scrambling up the side of the hu-
man tower to perch precariously at the top as the final touch before the whole struc-
ture gracefully disassembles itself; towers up to 10 levels high are built. Don't try this
