The Stefanoni brothers, Italian art restorers, brought the secrets of
strappo
(stripping of frescoes from walls) to Catalonia in the early 1900s. The Stefanoni
would cover frescoes with a sheet of fabric, stuck on with a glue made of cartil-
age. When dry, this allowed the image to be stripped off the wall and rolled up.
For three years the Stefanoni roamed the Pyrenean countryside, stripping
churches and chapels and sending the rolls back to Barcelona, where they were
eventually put back up on walls and inside purpose-built church apses to reflect
how they had appeared in situ.
