WORTH A DETOUR
TIBIDABO: GARDENS OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS
Framing the north end of the city, the forest-covered mountain of Tibidabo, which tops
out at 512m, is the highest peak in Serra de Collserola. Aside from the superb views
from the top, the highlights of Tibidabo include an 8000-hectare park, an old-fash-
ioned amusement park, a telecommunications tower with viewing platform and a
looming church that's visible from many parts of the city. Tibidabo gets its name from
the devil, who, trying to tempt Christ, took him to a high place and said, in Latin:'Haec
omnia tibi dabo si cadens adoraberis me'('All this I will give you if you fall down and
worship me').
To reach the church and amusement park, take an FGC train to Avinguda Tibidabo.
Outside Avinguda Tibidabo station, hop on thetramvia blau, which runs past fancy
Modernista mansions to Plaça del Doctor Andreu (one way €4.20, 15 minutes, every
15 or 30 minutes 10am to 8pm daily late June to early September, 10am to 6pm
Saturday, Sunday and holidays early September to late June). From Plaça del Doctor
Andreu the Tibidabo funicular railway climbs to the top of the hill (return €7.70, five
minutes). Departures start around 10am and continue until shortly after the Parc
d'Atraccions' closing time.
An alternative is bus T2A, the 'Tibibús', from Plaça de Catalunya to Plaça de Tibid-
abo (€3, 30 minutes, every 30 to 50 minutes on Saturday, Sunday and holidays year-
round and hourly from 10.15am Monday to Friday late June to early September).
For Parc de Collserola, take an FGC train to Baixador de Vallvidrera. Alternatively,
you can stop one station earlier at Peu del Funicular and ride to the top via funicular
railway.
Bus 111 runs between Tibidabo and Vallvidrera (passing in front of the Torre de Coll-
serola).
