This groovy space - with psychedelic colouring in the tables and bar stools, high white walls
out the back for exhibitions and events, a nice selection of teas, pastries and snacks, all set
on a pleasant pedestrian strip just behind the university - is perfect for a morning session on
your laptop or a civilised evening tipple while admiring the art.

A corridor leads to the dance floor of this place, located in a former theatre. House and other
electric sounds dominate, including a rather forward-sounding session of cutting-edge funk
called Get Funkd! on Tuesdays. Wednesday night is electro-house, while different guest DJs
pop up on Thursdays. Out the back from the dance floor is a soothing terrace.

A high-design gay bar run by two Aussies, with a retro sporting theme (antique racquets and
so on adorn the walls) and some superior bar food, along with craft beers. Those hoping for
handbag house and go-go boys will be disappointed - while it gets animated at night, Mat is
still a very civilised affair.

A designer bar with a difference. Wander in past distorting mirrors and ancient fairground
attractions from Germany. Put in coins and listen to hens squawk. Speaking of squawking,
the music swings wildly from whiffs of house through '90s hits to Spanish pop classics. You
can spend the earlier part of the night trying some of the bar's shots - it claims to have 500
varieties (but we haven't counted them up).
