The pleasant museum
cafe
offers courtyard seating and a small assortment of bites, as well
as a decent
menú del día
(set-price menu) at lunchtime. Also in the courtyard, you can
have a look at a swollen replica of the
Ictíneo,
one of the world's first submarines. It was
invented and built in 1858 by Catalan polymath Narcis Monturiol, and was operated by
hand-cranked propellers turned by friends of Monturiol who accompanied him on dozens of
successful short dives (two hours maximum) in the harbour. He later developed an even lar-
ger submarine powered by a combustion engine that allowed it to dive to 30m and remain
submerged for seven hours. Despite impressive demonstrations to awestruck crowds he nev-
er attracted the interest of the navy, and remains largely forgotten today.
