A tiny chocolate box of dark tinted Modernisme, the 'Umbrella' has been serving up drinks
since the 1960s. The turn-of-the-20th-century decor was transferred here from a shop
knocked down elsewhere in the district and cobbled back together to create this cosy locale.
Take a trip in time from Modernisme to medieval by heading downstairs to the brick and
stone basement bar area. Amid 11th-century walls, live bands - funk, soul, rock, blues -
hold court on Fridays and Saturdays (from 11.30pm).

This historic cultural centre (with roots dating back 150 years) hosts a range of high-brow

Barcelona's grand old opera house, restored after fire in 1994, is one of the most technolo-
gically advanced theatres in the world. To take up a seat in the grand auditorium, returned to
all its 19th-century glory but with the very latest in acoustic accoutrements, is to be trans-
ported to another age. Tickets can cost anything from €9 for a cheap seat behind a pillar to
€205 for a well-positioned night at the opera.

Following a €6 million renovation, this historic theatre has been transformed into a lavish
concert space and nightclub. It hosts a range of sounds from flamenco to indie rock.

For intense 30-minute sessions of chamber music, pay a visit to Museu d'Història de Bar-
celona (MUHBA). Concerts are held at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm on Sundays from February to
mid-June.
