In-Depth Information
vest target is met, anglers will be allowed to catch and release only). As if to reinforce what
remarkable adversaries these fish are, there is an archery season for paddlefish below Fort
Peck Dam in early July. Paddlefish roe is considered a delicacy among caviar connoisseurs,
but can only be purchased outside Montana.
The Missouri River also flows through the region and offers an abundance of trout, sal-
mon, pike, and the occasional paddlefish.
Despite the abundance of gentle terrain in the region, there are only a few golf courses
in the area, most of them nine-holers. The Cottonwood Country Club (504 Country Club
Dr., Glendive, 406/377-8797, www.cottonwoodcc.com ) in Glendive is a lovely course with
long holes, wide fairways, and mature cottonwood trees.
ACCOMMODATIONS AND CAMPING
Wherever you find communities in Montana, most often you'll find at least a couple of
roadside motels; options in eastern Montana, however, can be somewhat limited. In Terry,
the 1912 Kempton Hotel (204 Spring St., 406/635-5543, $75) has hosted such notable fig-
ures as Teddy Roosevelt and Calamity Jane. The hotel is showing its age, and long-range
plans are in place to restore it to its original glory.
Glendive is a safe bet for a comfortable, clean room. There are a number of chain motels
(including Comfort Inn, Days Inn, and Super 8), but the cream of the crop is the 89-room,
pet-friendly Astoria Hotel & Suites (201 California St., 406/377-6000, $139-179), which
offers a business center, indoor swimming pool and fitness center, free Wi-Fi, free break-
fast, and on-site dining. All of the nicely appointed and oversized rooms have microwaves,
refrigerators, and coffeemakers. This is indeed evidence of the New West.
For history buffs, and also in Glendive, the Charley Montana Bed & Breakfast (103
N. Douglas St., 406/365-3207 or 888/395-3207, www.charley-montana.com , $115-145) is
a grand old 25-room mansion built in 1907 by a famous St. Louis architect for stockman
Charles Krug, now maintained with period ambience and a casual atmosphere.
In addition to camping at Makoshika State Park, there are two private campgrounds
in Glendive. The AAA-rated Green Valley Campground (124 Green Valley Ln., 406/
377-1944 or 406/377-4156, www.greenvalleyrvcamp.com , $13 tent sites, $15.50 RV sites
with electric and water, $16.50 full hookup) has plenty of greenery and is located near
the Yellowstone River. Trout fishing is allowed on the premises without a license, and
there are plenty of other activities. There are 60 campsites as well as hot showers. Also
near the Yellowstone River is Riverview RV Park (900 S. Pearson, 406/377-7735,
www.glendiverv.com , $40).
