in the right direction. Call for information on packages related to fishing, hunting, or cast-
and-blast.
Among the many (but still never enough) accommodations for anglers in the Fort Smith
area are the modern Absaraka Fishing Bear Cabins (528 Fishing Bear Rd., 406/666-2304
or 877/506-4676, www.bighornfishingbearlodge.com , $95-250). When the fishing is good,
you'll need to have booked well in advance.
CAMPING
Immediately adjacent to the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument and not far
from Crow Fair, 7th Ranch (Reno Creek Rd., Garryowen, 800/371-7963,
www.historicwest.com , $28-41) offers a great location and plenty of amenities including
free Internet, cowboy cabins, horse stalls, and a tipi. Historical tours can be arranged.
FOOD
In much of Montana, especially in eastern Montana and on the Indian reservations, dining
options are few and far between. You have to be willing to look hard, and take a risk now
and again. There are some good places to be found.
Immediately off the highway near the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument is
the Custer Battlefield Trading Post and Café (406/638-2270, 8am-9pm daily summer,
9am-5pm daily winter, $6-12), a tourist shop and restaurant that obviously appeals to locals.
There is quite a selection of Crow Indian handicrafts in the shop, and the restaurant offers
Indian tacos, buffalo burgers, and plenty of variations on Montana beef.
In Hardin, you'll find a fantastic little pizza place called 3 Brothers Pizza & Sandwich
Company (316 N. Center Ave., 406/665-4246, 11am-9pm Mon.-Sat. summer, 11am-8pm
Mon.-Sat. winter), which offers a menu of pizza, sandwiches, and giant burgers. They also
have fresh salads, homemade pasta, and delicious desserts including bread pudding. Right
next to the movie theater (meals can be taken to go), this place is small but cool.
In Ashland, you can try the Hitching Post Café (206 Main St., 406/784-2779, 7am-8pm
Mon.-Fri., 9am-3pm Sat.-Sun.). Hours are subject to change seasonally. In Lame Deer,
check out the Dull Knife Café (1 College Dr., 406/477-3179, 8am-3pm Mon.-Fri.) inside
the college. Hours here can change daily, according to the number of customers.
