In-Depth Information
Know what to do in the event that you encounter a bear.
If you're camping in an area frequented by bears, look for bear signs (waste, overturned
rocks, decimated fallen timber, claw marks and hair on trees) around the campsite. Since
bears are attracted to all kinds of odors—food, toothpaste, soap, deodorant—your cooking,
eating, and food storage area should be at least 50 yards from your tent. It's tempting to
bring tasty items like sausage, ham, tuna, and bacon with you, but these smell good to bears
too. Freeze-dried foods are your best bet. Store foods in airtight bags, and be sure to hang all
food at least 12-15 feet off the ground and away from tree trunks. Some designated camp-
sites have bear storage containers or food storage poles.
