Free road maps can be found at visitors centers and rest areas in both states, while an excel-
lent supplement is the Delorme Gazetteer series ( www.delorme.com ) , available at book-
stores and in many gas stations. These oversize companions are a must for those venturing
off the beaten path, as they include topographic data, Forest Service roads and trails, camp-
ing and hiking information, fishing areas, scenic drives, and more. Sporting goods stores
offer more specialized maps, from national forests and wilderness areas to Bureau of Land
Management lands and mile-by-mile river guides. The free road maps you get when you
enter the national parks are sufficient to use during your stay.

For two states that were quite literally built by the railroads, train service today is spotty at
best. Amtrak's Empire Builder ( www.amtrak.com ), which travels in both directions daily
