In-Depth Information
Tipis across both states speak to a past with strong Native American influence.
The 2-million-acre Fort Peck Reservation is in northeastern Montana, 40 miles west of
the North Dakota border and 50 miles south of the Canadian border, with the Missouri River
defining its southern perimeter. About 6,800 Assiniboine and Sioux live on the reservation,
with another 3,900 living off the reservation. Though separate, both tribes have similar lan-
guages that descended from the same language family.
