CLIMBING THE ALPHABET
Faint letters, like this A on the Rocky Mountain Front, can be spotted on hillsides across the
West.
One of the things you'll notice fairly quickly when driving around Montana is the
seemingly endless number of large white letters on the hillsides or mountains. These
hillside letters—sometimes called geoglyphs or mountain monograms—are a source
of pride for many Montana localities, and in most cases highlight the first letter of
the adjacent town, school, or university. Over the years the letters have become not
just visible landmarks but cultural ones as well.
