In-Depth Information
Indian paintrbush is scattered across the West.
Elk are found throughout the mountainous region, and between 10,000 and 20,000 roam
free in Yellowstone National Park. These regal creatures are fairly common and can be
found at higher elevations in the summer and lower elevations in the winter. The Northern
Yellowstone elk herd numbered about 3,915 animals during the winter of 2012-2013; the
herd spends its winters just north of the park. The National Elk Refuge in Jackson, Wyom-
ing, is home to more than 6,000 wintering elk, as well as an educational visitors center and
winter sleigh rides that travel among the herd.
