HERBIVORES
Both Montana and Wyoming are known for their abundant wildlife, and it's only fitting
that residents and visitors want to see them in their natural habitat. Both herbivores and
predators roam the land, and with the right information a savvy traveler can seek out views
of these animals. Keep in mind that it is not acceptable to approach wildlife for any reas-
on—keep a safe distance away and never feed any animal.
Two herds totaling some 4,600 bison roam within the borders of Yellowstone National
Park, a far cry from the millions that once lived throughout central North America from
Canada to Mexico. These massive creatures graze on grasses and can weigh more than
2,000 pounds. Bison can commonly be seen almost any time of the year in Yellowstone, of-
ten causing traffic jams as they stand on the road. The National Bison Range wildlife refuge
in Moiese, Montana, also supports a herd of 350 animals and has a visitors center and inter-
pretive displays.
