the fossils and make rubbings of them. During summer, experts conduct fossil preparation
demonstrations and take questions from the public. There are two short trails that take vis-
itors through the unique history of the park and allow for some wildlife viewing. During
summer, plan to visit 11am-4pm Friday-Saturday to assist paleontologists as they collect
fossils at the research quarry.

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area
The
Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area
is full of beautiful rock formations, spec-
tacular land, and rich natural colors. The area was aptly named by a group led by Major
John Wesley Powell, who started their famous journey down the Green River from where
the town of Green River now stands. The explorers floated through the rocky canyons and
were stunned by the striking red hues, particularly in Utah.
The area consists of more than 200,000 acres and crosses southwestern Wyoming into
northeastern Utah. The landscape in Wyoming is primarily high desert, and the more
impressive and dramatic sights are found over the border in Utah. There are three
roads—Highway 530, U.S. Highway 191, and Utah Highway 44—that connect to form a
loop around the national recreation area. The visitors center is on the Utah side at Red
Canyon.
