pied until 1899, however.
When the mines eventually did reopen, 45 men were fired by Union Pacific for
their role in the violence. Sixteen men were arrested in conjunction with the riot and
held in Green River. Although a grand jury was called in Green River, no indictments
were handed out, and the men were released a month later to a heroes' welcome.
The only form of justice came as a response by the U.S. government to appease
the Chinese government. With much finagling, President Grover Cleveland per-
suaded Congress to issue financial compensation to China for $149,000. During the
1920s and 1930s, the Union Pacific Coal Company paid retirement packages and
purchased tickets for retired miners to return to China. Only one of the miners chose
to live his final days in Rock Springs.
