Hiking and Biking
For being in the middle of a high desert, Cheyenne has a remarkable number of green parks
to explore and enjoy on two feet or two wheels. The Greater Cheyenne Greenway links
several of the parks with 10 miles of paved trails open to hikers and bikers. Sections of trail
wind through Crow Creek, Dry Creek, Sun Valley, Lions Park, and Allison Draw, among
other parts of town. The trails also serve as a wildlife corridor, so keep your eyes peeled.
Located halfway between Cheyenne and Laramie on the Happy Jack Road, Curt
Gowdy State Park (1319 Happy Jack Rd., 307/632-7946, http://wyoparks.state.wy.us , day
use $4 residents, $6 nonresidents) contains more than 35 miles of trails connecting three
reservoirs as well as four open free-ride areas. The trails were given an Epic designation by
the International Mountain Biking Association, and all are open to both hikers and bikers.
Among the longer trails are Canyon's Trail (5.43 miles), Stone Temple Circuit (3.75
miles), Lariat (2.92 miles), and Shoreline (2.63 miles). The area is also open to horses. A
map is available online or at the park. Pets are not permitted in the water at Gowdy, and the
area is usually packed on warm weekends with campers and recreationists.
