When Casper residents are eager to flee the city, particularly in the heat of summer, they
head to
Casper Mountain,
an alpine oasis just minutes from town. In addition to a popular
downhill ski area, several campgrounds and parks, and miles of beautiful, forested hiking
and biking trails, Casper Mountain is also rich with history and culture.
An early settler from Missouri, Elizabeth “Neal” Forsling, fled a horrible marriage with
her two young daughters to homestead on the top of Casper Mountain in the 1920s. An
artist and writer, Forsling was strong, independent, and loved the mountain with all of her
being. She fell in love with and married a local rancher, Jim, who joined her in her happy
life on the mountaintop, but when he froze to death at just age 38 while skiing home from
town with supplies, Neal dedicated herself even more to the land on which she lived. She
