Another wonderful family-oriented ranch in the area is the HF Bar Ranch (1301 Rock

fun activities for kids. The HF Bar is the second-oldest dude ranch in the country after
Eatons Ranch in Wolf.
CAMPING
Inexpensive public campgrounds ($9-12) may be found nearby in the Bighorn National
Forest ( www.stateparks.com/bighorn.html ) , about 15 miles west of Buffalo on U.S. High-
way 16. Closer to town is the Big Horn Mountains Campground
( www.buffalaocamping.com , $20 tents, $26 RVs), owned and run by Paul and Bev Chaffee.
Tent sites are available with or without electricity, the restrooms are always clean, there is a
24-hour laundry room, and discounted weekly rates are available.
FOOD
Known for their hearty breakfasts and great steaks and burgers, Main Street Diner (41
N. Main St., Buffalo, 307/684-5627, 7am-2pm Tues.-Fri., 7am-noon Sat., 8am-noon Sun.,
$6-12) has a full menu and a great small-town feel.
Up in Smoke (94 S. Main St., Buffalo, 307/217-2290, www.upinsmokebuffalowy.com ,
11am-10pm Thurs., 11am-midnight Fri.-Sat., 5pm-9pm Mon. $8-19) offers a unique ap-
proach to barbecue. They use organic produce, dairy, and chicken whenever possible; all of
their dishes are made from scratch; and their take-out containers, made from cornstarch, are
biodegradable. In other words, if there is such a thing as healthy and green barbecue, this
is it. Sit outside on warm summer evenings and savor the delicious food with a cold beer.
Monday nights are pizza nights, along with their regular barbecue. And there's live music
on Friday and Saturday nights. They accept cash and local checks only, no credit cards.
For family dining and three square meals a day, this Western states chain restaurant,
Bozeman Trail Steakhouse (675 E. Hart, 307/684-5555,
www.thebozemantrailsteakhouse.com , $9-27), is a safe bet for everyone. Little ones will
love the kids' menu, and adults will appreciate the variety from steaks and game to Mexican
specialties, huge salads, and good old-fashioned favorites like chicken-fried steak.
By far the most upscale dining experience in town is The Virginian (10 N. Main
