RECREATION
Hiking
In addition to the wealth of trails in the nearby Bighorn National Forest ( www.fs.usda.gov/
bighorn ) , Buffalo has an excellent 12-mile trail system in town. Known as the Clear Creek
Trail System, the well-marked trails can be accessed around town at various spots, includ-
ing the historic shopping district on Main Street, the motel circle near the intersection of
I-25 and U.S. Highway 16, the city park, and the Mosier Gulch picnic area. Mountain bikes
are welcome on the trail, and maps are available through the Buffalo Chamber of Com-
merce (800/227-5122, www.buffalowyo.com ).
Swimming
Buffalo has a wonderful free public outdoor swimming pool, the largest in the state, that
attracts locals and visitors alike on warm summer days. The enormous pool at Washington
Memorial Park (S. Burritt Ave. and W. Angus St.) is surrounded by trees, walking trails,
and prime picnic spots. There is also a water park for kids and a snack shack. The pool is
open mid-morning-sunset June-August.
Fishing
For fishing gear and current conditions on such varied water as Clear Creek, Rock Creek,
the Powder River, and a variety of mountain and prairie lakes, stop in to The Sports Lure
(66 S. Main St., 800/684-7682, www.sportslure.com ).
Buffalo offers an excellent way to pair two of the state's favorite pastimes. For guided

tact South Fork Mountain Lodge & Outfitters (U.S. 16 W., 16 miles west of Buffalo,
www.southfork-lodge.com , 307/267-2609, $250 full-day). Their guides know how to find
the rainbows, brookies, native cutthroats, browns, and golden trout.
To leave the horse behind and just focus on the fish, Rock Creek Anglers (1301 Rock
Creek Rd., Saddlestring, 888/945-3876, www.rockcreekanglers.com ) can get you onto any
number of rivers, plus private waters, for a chance at hauling in some trout. They can also
arrange accommodations.
