In-Depth Information
The best place to launch a visit to the Pryor Range is the Pryor Mountain Wild
Mustang Center (U.S. 14A, Lovell, WY, 307/548-9453, www.pryormustangs.org ,
9am-5pm Mon.-Fri. summer, 10am-2pm Mon.-Fri. winter), where staff can tell you
about current sightings and locations.
If you drive north along Highway 37 from U.S. Highway 14A east of Lovell into
the Bighorn Canyon Recreation Area, you may get lucky and see some mustangs.
Sightings are more frequent on East Pryor Mountain, but travel is much more diffi-
cult and requires four-wheel drive. There are outfitters willing to take you into the
backcountry for a better chance of seeing these wild and beautiful creatures. It is crit-
ical that your presence does not impact or change their behavior in any way. The
standard distance to keep from the mustangs is 100 feet.
Among the other chain hotels in town are Motel 6 (911 Sibley Circle, 307/673-9500,
$63-90), Days Inn (1104 E. Brundage Ln., 307/672-2888, $59-118), Best Western Sherid-
an Center (612 N. Main St., 307/674-7421, $90-139), and Holiday Inn (1809 Sugarland
Dr., 307/672-8931 or 800/315-2621, $95-161).
For a unique experience just 15 miles south of Sheridan (take Hwy. 335 to County Rd.
77 to Canyon Ranch Rd.), the 3,000-acre Canyon Ranch (59 Canyon Ranch Rd., Big
Horn, 307/674-6239, www.canyonranchbighorn.com ) has been run by the Wallop family
for more than a century and offers ranch-type accommodations and vacation rentals as well
as activities like fly-fishing. From historic cabins ($1,500-2,000 weekly) upgraded with all
the modern amenities—flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, modern kitchens, and laundry rooms—to
the Canyon Ranch Lodge ($3,000 weekly), this is ranch living at its most beautiful.
GUEST RANCHES
One beloved dude ranch in the area, operating for more than a century, is the H F Bar (307/
684-2487, www.hfbar.com , $375/day adults, $300/day children 5-12, all-inclusive, 7-day
minimum June 15-Aug. 15), about 35 miles from Sheridan or 20 miles northwest of Buf-
falo. The cabins are at once rustic and comfortable, and activities include horseback riding,
fishing, hiking, and sporting clays, among others.
For a comprehensive list of dude ranches across the region, contact the Dude Ranchers'
Association (307/587-2339, www.duderanch.org ), which represents more than 100 of the
West's most respected ranches. Another excellent resource for finding the ideal dude ranch
vacation is Gene Kilgore's Ranchweb ( www.ranchweb.com ) .
