Hiking
With the Big Horn Mountains looming so close to town, there is plenty of country to get
lost in within an easy drive from Sheridan. To plan a good hike or backpacking trip, visit
the U.S. Forest Service (2013 Eastside 2nd St., Sheridan, 307/674-2600, www.fs.usda.gov/
bighorn ) for maps and advice. Right downtown, The Sport Shop (208 N. Main St., 307/
672-5356) and Solitude Clothing + Mountaineering (38 S. Main St., 307/655-8231) can
outfit hikers and backpackers or just offer friendly advice.
For adventurous types keen to head out, there are hundreds of trails in the Bighorn Na-
tional Forest, many of which can be accessed from the Big Horn Scenic Byway on U.S.
Highway 14. One such trail is the Tongue River, an 18.2-mile out-and-back hike that leaves
from a trailhead roughly 9 miles west of Ranchester on County Road 92 in the Tongue River
Canyon. Though the trail climbs more than 3,000 vertical feet over 9 miles, hikers looking
for a shorter route will be delighted with the 2-mile round-trip hike along the gushing river
and up a set of switchbacks to a rather large limestone cave that can be explored if you have
the right equipment (headlamps are essential). Be on the lookout, however, for livestock,
poison ivy, and rattlesnakes; even with them, this is a beautiful spot.
A map of the paved and unpaved trails that cover much of the town of Sheridan is avail-
able online ( www.sheridanwy.net ) .
Fishing
There is no shortage of fantastic fishing spots around Sheridan. Anglers have long flocked
to the region to wet a line on the Tongue River, Little Goose Creek, and Big Goose Creek
as well as any of the dozens of pristine alpine lakes in the region, including Sibley Lake
and Lake DeSmet.
For up-to-date information and all the gear you could possibly need, stop into Fly Shop
of the Big Horns (334 N. Main St., 307/672-5866, www.sheridanflyfishing.com ). They of-
fer guided walk/wade and float trips to blue-ribbon trout waters on both public and private
lands. All-day trips for two people start at $325, all-inclusive.
Horseback Riding
While Sheridan is surrounded by some of the best guest ranches in the country that focus on
riding, there are a few options for visitors to town who are looking for a riding opportunity
without the full-on ranch experience. About 20 minutes from Sheridan is Rangeland En-
terprises (394 Beaver Creek Rd., 307/672-6717, www.rangelandhuntingadventures.com ,
