The West's version of the Smithsonian, the Buffalo Bill Center of the West (720 Sheridan

free for children under 6) is a collection of five extraordinary museums plus a research lib-
rary. The Buffalo Bill Museum celebrates the private and public life of town father W. F.
“Buffalo Bill” Cody. The Whitney Gallery of Western Art reflects the diverse history of
art of the American West from the early 19th century to today with original paintings, sculp-
ture, and prints by some of the best-known deceased masters and contemporary geniuses.
The Plains Indian Museum examines the culture and history of the Arapaho, Crow, Chey-
enne, Blackfeet, Sioux, Shoshone, and others through an impressive collection of Native
American art and artifacts. The Cody Firearms Museum is home to the world's largest as-
semblage of American arms along with some European arms dating back to the 1500s. The
Draper Museum of Natural History offers exhibits that interpret the Greater Yellowstone
ecosystem from human and natural science perspectives. Finally, the Harold McCracken
Research Library is an extraordinary resource for studies of the American West.
