Hiking and Rock Climbing
The Wind River and Wyoming Ranges, which include the Jim Bridger and Gros Ventre Wil-
derness Areas, offer some of the best hiking and climbing in the state. Hundreds of miles of
trails crisscross the area and give hikers and backpackers access to hundreds of thousands
of acres of gorgeous alpine and subalpine terrain. Many of the trailheads are at 9,000 feet
and higher, so be prepared for significant and immediate changes in the weather. Prime hik-
ing season this high is short—mid-July-mid-September—and it can snow any day of the
year. Average daytime summer temperatures peak in the 70s and 80s, with nighttime lows
dropping into the 30s. Afternoons often bring rainstorms with lightning, so be prepared to
get lower in a hurry. Always be aware that this is black bear and grizzly bear country, so
plan ahead to bring pepper spray.
