RECREATION
Fremont Lake
The second-largest natural lake in the state, Fremont Lake (4 miles north of Pinedale,
307/367-4326, www.pinedale.com ) was formed glacially and is more than 600 feet deep in
places. The lake was named for John C. Fremont, who mapped the area in 1842 in advance
of the Oregon Trail. The lake is a natural recreation site with opportunities for boating, sail-
ing, water-skiing, fishing, and camping. Though there are no designated hiking trails around
the lake, most of the shoreline is undeveloped and can be walked on. The 54 RV and tent
campsites at the newly renovated Fremont Lake Campground ($15), operated by the U.S.
Forest Service at the lower end of the lake, are generally open mid-June-early September
and can be reserved through www.reserveUSA.com . Also at the lower end of the lake, the
Sandy Beach picnic area is for day use only.
For an incredibly scenic drive or bike ride, Skyline Drive is a 16-mile paved road along
the lake's eastern shore that leads to a campground and hiking trails at the edge of the
Bridger Wilderness.
The only commercial facility at Fremont Lake is the idyllic Lakeside Lodge Resort &
Marina (99 Forest Service Rd., 307/367-2221 or 877/755-5253, www.lakesidelodge.com ,
year-round), which offers 12 beautiful cabins ($75-169), a full-service restaurant (307/
367-3555, lunch and dinner daily summer, dinner daily winter), and rental of fishing boats,
pontoon boats, and ski boats ($15-60/hour).
Fishing and Boating
There are literally hundreds of lakes in the vicinity of Pinedale that contain several species
of trout and a few Montana grayling, as well as an assortment of freestone waterways that
include the world-class Green, Hoback, and New Fork Rivers. Wild trout abound in smaller
streams too, including Faler Creek, Fish Creek, and North Cottonwood Creek in the Wyom-
ing Range, some of which are private-lease streams.
The best place to start any fishing expedition is at Two Rivers Emporium (211 W. Pine
St., 307/367-4131 or 800/329-4353, www.2rivers.net ), which can outfit you from rod to
leader to fly and offers a range of guided trips (from $385/day for 1-2 people), including
wading on private waters, and can include lodging and gourmet meals.
With so many lakes in the region, canoeing is a wonderful and quiet way to navigate the
myriad waterways. Lake-use canoe rentals ($35 full-day) and stand-up paddleboards ($45/
day) are available in town from the Great Outdoor Shop (332 W. Pine St., 307/367-2440,
www.greatoutdoorshop.com , 7am-9pm Mon.-Sat., 7am-8pm Sun. summer, 8am-8pm daily
